Intel® Technologies for Feature-Rich Interactive Kiosks

Deliver intelligent, seamless experiences with interactive digital kiosks.

The latest interactive kiosks in banks, restaurants, smart cities, public transit stations, and hospitals are built on Intel® processors that provide responsive experiences and the convenience users expect.

The latest interactive kiosks are changing the way people bank, order meals, travel, find information, and get help. And with capabilities for data gathering and analytics, businesses and cities have unprecedented insights into their users and environments—information that helps them improve experiences, services, and quality of life.

For example:

  • Self-service kiosks at banks let customers skip the teller line for tasks like opening an account or purchasing a financial product.
  • Self-ordering kiosks at quick-service restaurants give customers the convenience of placing and paying for their orders.
  • Interactive wayfinding kiosks help visitors navigate a city, public transit system, hospital, or shopping center.
  • Smart city kiosks deliver information, Wi-Fi services, and public safety alerts to citizens and tourists.

Intel® processors deliver a powerful foundation for interactive kiosks with support for impressive graphics, analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), connectivity, sensor data, and capabilities like remote management.

Vibrant, Responsive Kiosks with Intel® Core™ Processors

Interactive kiosks featuring Intel® Core™ processors support dynamic, 4K visual experiences and responsive touchscreens. For powerful video analytics and AI-enabled capabilities like people counting and audience analytics, these processors can be paired with an Intel® Movidius™ Vision Processing Unit (VPU) or FPGA.

Intel® Active Management Technology—available as part of the Intel vPro® platform on a wide range of Intel® Core™ processors—offers smart, connected, and remote device management to help improve customer experiences and provide potential cost savings. It also adds an extra layer of hardware-based security that complements and augments existing security measures.1

Modules for Scalable, Easy-to-Maintain Kiosks

Intel offers two specially designed modules that serve as building blocks for interactive kiosks.

The Intel® Smart Kiosk Module (Intel® SKM) is a revolutionary compute module and peripheral interface board (PIB) with high-speed PCIe* connectivity. It has one standard size, regardless of the kiosk design. Its modular design makes it less labor intensive and costly to maintain, upgrade, and service. Supporting multiple workloads on a single device, the Intel® Smart Kios Module (Intel® SKM) makes it easier to scale interactive kiosks across an enterprise, providing for potential cost savings.

The Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM) is a specification and reference design for all-in-one systems, including kiosks. Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM) delivers intelligence and interoperability in a small form factor for thin, integrated displays. It’s ideal for fanless designs with smaller I/O requirements.

Intel® NUC for Interactive Kiosks

The Intel® NUC board is a building block for interactive kiosks that offers support for touchscreens and Intel® HD Graphics. This enables vibrant HD video playback for immersive user experiences. The Intel vPro® platform offers additional security and remote management capabilities.

Support for Connectivity and Sensors

With the ability to connect to Wi-Fi or 5G, an interactive kiosk can serve as a hotspot and provide VoIP emergency calling. Intel® technology-based kiosks offer support for these connectivity options.

Intel® processor-based kiosks also support a sensor hub to collect audio, visual, and other data. This allows kiosks to monitor the environment for possible safely issues, like gunshots and alarms, or perform tasks like people counting. Display brightness and fan operation can automatically adjust based on data from temperatures and luminance sensors. Intel provides a reference code for acoustic and sensing workloads to help integrate these features.

Add New Capabilities with Computer Vision

The Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit makes it easier to incorporate vision-enabled capabilities, such as object recognition and audience analytics, into interactive kiosks. While these applications are relatively new, vision will enable a new generation of kiosks that automatically recognize which items a customer is purchasing, respond to touchless gestures, or even trigger more lanes or kiosks to open when lines are long. These capabilities will give customers the benefit of greater control and convenience, while delivering valuable new insights to businesses and cities.
