Accelerate the Network Transformation to NFV
With the development of today’s many bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications, there is a massive increase in customer demand for more bandwidth. This places a huge burden on service providers to evolve all segments of their wireline networks rapidly to support this huge traffic demand in voice, video, and data. Innovations are constantly taking place in the access, transmission, and networking equipment arenas to aggregate, transport, and deliver the 5G traffic. These innovative technologies require a flexible platform that delivers solutions quickly, while having an established, low-cost migration path for successful high-volume production deployment. With a complete portfolio of high-performance, low-cost FPGAs and Intel's programmable logic devices (PLDs) deliver the processing bandwidth and flexibility required for wireline infrastructure designs. To accelerate the time to market, Intel also provides a wide array of intellectual property (IP), reference designs, and complete off-the-shelf partner solutions via the Intel® wireline ecosystem. Intel's 14nm and 20nm silicon leadership, supporting tools, and solutions enable a higher level of system integration for wireline communication infrastructure platforms.
NFV
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) has been the focus of the Communications Service Providers (CoSPs) as the COTS software programmable with configurable hardware technology to improve total cost of ownership, flexibility in deployment with enhanced services depending on customer demands.
Intel has teamed up with OEMs, Telco Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs), and Virtual Network Function (VNF) partners to work in lock step with the Intel® Architecture (IA) based NFV solution offerings to create a scalable, open-source based interoperable NFV platform components that enhance the performance of the overall offering at 100G+ network function bandwidth needs specifically for virtual Broadband Network Gateways (vBNG) and virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) solutions. These VNFs can also be paired with security as an accelerated function as well.
Networking
Intel enables the rapid deployment of turnkey solutions for Networking with DPDK compatible IPs, which showcase the abilities of the FPGA to build cutting-edge terabit rate feature-rich networking functions. Intel has internally developed and partner enabled Algorithmic TCAM, Deep packet inspection, traffic management, and NPU replacement IPs that enable wide applicability on networking control and data planes. Intel is aligned with the Open networking standards ecosystem and has a clear plan to be able to deploy P4 enabled networking IPs, which spur innovation of efficient and rapidly deployable network features that Communications service providers require the telecom equipment manufactures to support flexibly across software and hardware.
Security
Today’s network communications infrastructure requires end-to-end security, from SOHO appliances to hybrid cloud data centers to carrier service provider. Whether it is data in flight or at rest, security throughout the communications spectrum has become a baseline requirement, provisioned through industry-standard network security protocols such as MACsec and IPsec. These requirements become especially challenging when one considers the unique software environments associated with various network security points, from bump-in-the-wire VNF acceleration (CPU offload) in the DC cloud, to firewall/DPI appliances at the gateway, to embedded line-card storage engines in the enterprise. Intel offers full-turnkey MACsec and IPsec soft-IP FPGA solutions, each with a baseline feature set that is typically relevant to most end user applications.
Optical Transport
There is a transformation ongoing within the optical transport network. As the traffic bandwidth needs increase due to 5G, hybrid cloud, and Internet of Things (IoT), larger and larger pipes are introduced to service these needs. Dynamic allocation based on need is a must-have for the operators all while considering time to market, cost per bit, and power. In addition, carriers are looking for ways to further monetize their transport systems by offering services and applications. Intel® FPGAs can address these varied datapath needs in high growth areas such as 5G mobile fronthaul, data center interconnect (DCI), and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), as well as traditional transport, while utilizing Intel® Xeon® processors for services and applications built upon the transport layer. Customers can increase flexibility and reduce risks by utilizing Intel’s FPGA programmability, while taking advantage of Intel’s strong internal intellectual property (IP) team and solution partner ecosystem to reduce overall solution cost through standards-based IP. All this allows for a complete end-to-end Intel solution in transport.
