When Dell Technologies set out to create the Latitude 9510—a laptop that could push the envelope on computing solutions to evolve and improve business communications, fit a huge battery, offer an immersive LCD experience on a thin-and-light form factor, and pioneer first-of-its-kind technologies—they knew the traditional design process wasn’t enough to achieve these daring ambitions and industry-first innovations.

The technical challenges of such a bold design, the first in its new Latitude 9000 series of ultra-premium and ultra-thin and light business laptops, would require partnering with experts in processors and board design from the earliest stage, when the laptop is just a concept on a slide.

That’s why Dell chose Intel’s Innovation Excellence Program (IEP) – focused on driving OEM innovation through deep co-engineering collaboration starting at the device concept phase all the way through product implementation.

IEP: Excellence Through Extensive Collaboration

The Latitude 9510 is one of just a select number of laptop designs that were chosen for IEP in 2018, as a 2020 design. It exemplifies how IEP’s extensive co-engineering focuses on solving challenges and pushes the boundaries, leveraging a range of expertise, resources, and support that Intel offers our partners.

Like all IEP projects, our collaboration with Dell on the Latitude 9510 began 18 months before release. Intel partnered with Dell through early engagement on architecture, board, and system design; an innovation catalogue of more than 120 proprietary Intel technologies and IPs; continuous collaboration with subject matter experts and priority access to debug workshops; power and performance optimization; user experience evaluation; and a dedicated program manager.

The Dell Latitude 9510: A Game-Changing Business Laptop

As a hero design for Dell in 2020, they wanted the Latitude 9510 to pack all the best technologies and capabilities for business into the thinnest, most compact form factor—just over 3 pounds and less than 14mm tall.

This ambitious goal required solving a number of complex challenges throughout the IEP design process:

  • Taking risks, pushing the boundaries: The secret to the Latitude 9510’s impressive battery life is a smaller motherboard. To create it, Intel’s engineers shared concept boards and prototypes with Dell early on, then developed an innovative “stack-up” design that took more risks to make room for a large 88-Watt hour battery.
  • Pushing the boundary on form factor: Dell worked with the laptop ecosystem to enable the Latitude 9510’s unique visuals: a 15-inch Infinity Edge display on a 14-inch form factor chassis. These seemingly impossible dimensions give people more visual space for professional productivity, creative work, and immersive entertainment.
  • Solving for the noisy home office: The Latitude 9510 meets the needs of workers in loud remote environments. The first-of-its-kind, higher-fidelity, lower-power SoundWire audio architecture, together with a built-in speakerphone and excellent amplifier, ensures calls are clear, crisp, and free from echo or background noise.
  • Rooted in human understanding: In addition to IEP, the Latitude 9510 is part of Intel’s innovation program, Project Athena, a program designed to incubate and deliver the future’s most advanced laptop experiences and form factors. To be a part of the Project Athena innovation program, laptop designs, like the Latitude 9510, are co-engineered, tuned and tested with Intel to show they’ve met or surpassed the program’s tech specification and real-world key experiences spanning battery life, responsiveness, and instant wake.
  • Built for business: The Dell Latitude 9510 is also one of the first Project Athena-based laptop designs offered on the 10th Gen Intel vPro® platform. This means business customers can get the Latitude 9510’s sophisticated capabilities together with the Intel vPro® platform’s business-grade performance, built-in security features, unparalleled manageability, and reliability and stability.
