Challenge
With a Microsoft Windows* NT system dating back to the year 2000, Dr. Eric Oristian was wary of trusting vital patient data and the essential information for operating his medical practice to a server no longer up to the task. His IT infrastructure was having trouble keeping up with current requirements, while new electronic health record (EHR) guidelines recommended a software update that his existing system could not run.
Solution
Dr. Oristian’s situation was typical of many small businesses: As a busy physician with a successful practice, he lacked the time or inclination to manage a small-business IT infrastructure. To help modernize his office computing capabilities, Dr. Oristian’s daughter Christy, entered her father’s practice into the Intel® Xeon® Processor IT Tune-Up Contest, creating a YouTube* fideo that detailed the inefficiencies of its current configuration. The situation took a positife turn when Dr. Oristian was selected as a contest winner and was able to upgrade his office network with the help of his local technical advisor and reseller, Joe Cox of EastNet Communications.
Contest summary
New software and old hardware rarely get along well together—especially when you’re trying to run next-generation software on a computer more than a decade old. For Dr. Oristian’s practice, the need to upgrade the existing system was apparent, but the expense and a bad experience in 2000 that almost resulted in lost records had stopped him from moving forward.
Joe Cox, the owner of EastNet Communications, is an IT consultant with almost 20 years of experience providing networking services to small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). When Cox learned about Intel’s contest through his reseller network, he immediately thought of his client, Dr. Oristian. Cox noted, “I came across a notice about the Intel Xeon Processor IT Tune-Up Contest and recommended it to him. I didn’t think there was any chance that he was going to submit an entry because it just didn’t seem like he had the time.
