Business & Decision Group combines storage and network traffic onto Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters As part of a program to continuously increase computing power and reduce energy consumption at its green data center in Grenoble, France, Business & Decision Group recently trialed the benefits of consolidating storage and network traffic onto a high-bandwidth 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) fabric. The reduction in equipment and cabling provided by 10 GbE simplifies network management and maintenance, consumes less energy, and, from a customer perspective, enables faster cloud availability. Business & Decision Group is now consolidating its entire data center network to Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Server Adapters. Challenges • Continuous improvement. Business & Decision Group wanted to improve the energy efficiency and computing performance of its green data center in Grenoble, France • Avoiding server sprawl. To cut the number of cables it needed, the company looked for an alternative way to increase bandwidth to virtual machines (VMs) other than adding network interface cards (NICs) a gigabit at a time Solutions • 10 GbE from Intel. Trialed the benefits of Intel® Ethernet Server Adapters X520-DA2 on a small section of its green data center, connecting two Dell PowerVault* storage servers with 211 virtual machines running on 12 Dell PowerEdge* 1U rack servers Impact • Simpler management. Reduced the number of cables from 84 to just 24, simplifying network management and reducing the number of potential points of failure • Flexible and reliable. Redundancy is now built into everything, helping to improve reliability; each data flow can potentially use up to 10 GbE rather than 1 GbE bandwidth, meaning customers benefit from faster cloud availability • Energy nirvana. Less cabling and fewer network adapters consume less energy and also require less cooling, helping Business & Decision Group improve the energy efficiency of its green data center
